Watu Wa Gaming
Kenya's gaming media site and community hub
watuwagaming.site is the home of an East African gaming community of 1,000+ members: posts and news, videos, a creators directory, the yearly creator awards, a gear marketplace, events, forums and live game servers, all wired into the community's Discord. The 2026 rebuild runs as a Go API, a React app and PostgreSQL on one small server, replacing the 2025 Next.js and Supabase site.
Built alongside the community's founder, who also writes code. The 2026 source is private, so the links cover the live site and the open-source reporters.
What I built
- Game Server Presence API: keys, heartbeats and live server pages, with open-source reporters for Minecraft (Paper, Fabric), FiveM and Steam-query games, plus a setup guide for each game.
- Engagement build: follow a creator and see who is live, stream schedules, game nights posted as Discord events, co-presence streaks and squad points from voice chat, and Discord /live, /schedule and /servers commands.
- Admin rework: one searchable shell for the whole admin, with queues that show moderators what is waiting.
- The 2025 site: an awards system with nominations, voting and results on Supabase, and a configurable Discord bot with a Quart admin dashboard.
